Why are my exhaust valves white?

Consensus seems to be that the white deposits are ash from burning oil that get deposited on the exhaust valves because of their extremely high temperature - which seems plausible I guess. I use Miller's octane booster / lead replacement additive which seems to leave brown deposits on exhaust valves and sparking plugs.

Are white exhaust valves normal?

Those white exhaust valves are fine. The others might have some slight wear at guides or a little oil getting past the oil rings. Black intake ports could be PCV vapors ,leaky intake manifold gaskets or rich carb. This could also be causing the deposits your seeing in the cylinders.

What causes carbon buildup on exhaust valves?

Carbon deposits and buildup are a by-product of combustion in an engine that comes from incomplete fuel combustion. This black soot, similar to that which collects in a chimney, will harden on internal engine components such as injector nozzles, cylinder walls, intake valves, and more.

Leaky and Burnt Exhaust Valves Signs

What are the signs of a burnt valve?

If a cylinder has a burnt valve, that cylinder won't seal properly, leading to a loss of compression. The engine will begin to misfire and run rough as a result.

Can a valve stretch?

Valves do not significantly stretch in most cases, but seat surfaces, and valve faces do wear, seats sink into the head, cylinders sink into case and heads, all of which makes them seem like they do. Well, they probably do stretch, but it's not a lot. The #1 cause of broken valve is worn out guides, for sure.

How does an exhaust valve get burnt?

Burnt valves occur when the valve can no longer seal correctly after excessive temperatures have damaged the material of the valve. When this happens, combustion gases are able to escape. These gases will start to burn the edges of the valve as they are forced through it.

Can exhaust leak cause burnt valve?

For the most part, burnt valves are caused by the valve not sealing correctly. An exhaust leak causing a burnt valve comes from the idea of reduced back pressure in the exhaust system allowing unburnt fuel past the valve (evacuating the cylinder prior to complete burn).

What causes exhaust valve failure?

The exhaust valves open when the combustion process ends and burned gases flow out of the cylinder. The exhaust and intake valves are exposed to thermal and mechanical overstress which can be sources of valve failures. During the valve closing, a combination of impact and sliding can lead to valve seat wear.
