How many Spurs are on a ring main?
Answered by Rupert, Electrical Safety Expert
You can have one unfused spur per socket-outlet on a ring main or one fused spur per socket-outlet, you can have as many sockets as you like off of a fused spur.
How many Spurs can I take off a ring main?
The rules for spurring off ring circuits are you are allowed ONE unfused spur to a socket (single or double) or ONE fused spur to as many sockets as you wish. You can't have both on the same point. How many fused spurs can you have on a ring?
The limit of one spur per point is if the point which is spurred off is UNFUSED. If you fuse it to 13A you can put as many as you want on it. The reason I explained was that standard final ring circuits wired in 2.5mm2 T&E are designed such that any point on the ring will not be loaded above 20A for an extended period. How many sockets can be on a spur?
How Many Sockets Can Be on a Spur? Only one spur can be connected to a single socket. Can I put 2 double sockets on a spur?
you can have maximum one double socket as a normal spur but if you are going from socket to FCU fused at 13 amp from there you can add as many sockets as you wish as all the sockets and cable will be protected by the fuse so no chance of overloading the cable the fuse will blow first.SPUR ON RING CIRCUIT. Learn about connecting spurs to an electrical socket ring circuit
Can you run a spur off a spur?
The easiest way of connecting into a ring circuit is to run a spur cable from the terminals of an existing socket – but you can't connect it to any socket. The IEE Wiring Regulations are very specific about this. You mustn't run a spur from a socket that's already on a spur, or that already supplies a spur. Can you remove 2 Spurs one socket?
Only one fused spur may be taken from any socket on a ring. From that fused spur you can have as many electrical outlets as you like, as they are then protected by the fuse. How many 13A sockets can be on a ring circuit?
The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) permit an unlimited number of 13A socket outlets (at any point unfused single or double, or any number fused) to be installed on a ring circuit, provided that the floor area served does not exceed 100 m2.How many sockets can you put on a ring main?
There is no limit on how many sockets you can install on a 32-amp ring main. However, the maximum load for a circuit at any given time should be 7,500 watts. Can you spur off a ring main in 1.5 mm?
no because you will have a 32 amp mcb protecting a 1.5mm2 cable. Can I add more sockets to a ring main?
Make sure the power is turned off and any circuits you are working on are completely isolated. See our electrical safety project. If you need extra sockets in a new room or turn an old room into an office, it may not be possible to add extra sockets from your existing ring main. Can I run a socket from a fused spur?
If the 13 amp fused spur is on the ring circuit and you want to add a socket to the load side of the fused spur yes that is fine as that individual socket will be protected by the 13a fuse in the spur. If unsure please call a qualified electrician to carry out your works to be on the safe side. What is the maximum load on a ring main?
In very simple terms, the ring main can deliver 32A - it does this by using cable rated at 16A wired in a ring, so that each socket or outlet has 2 paths back to the consumer unit. Can I take a spur off a ring main?
Branches know as spurs may be taken off the ring from any socket or by breaking into one of the cables of the ring. They can either be non-fused which connect directly to the ring or can be a fused spur which connect to the ring via a switched or unswitched-fused connection unit.Is extending a ring main notifiable?
extending an existing ring main is considered minor work and a minor works certs is all that required. installing sockets to external building is notifiable. How many double sockets can you have on a ring circuit?
There is no limit to the number of sockets you can have on a ring main but there is a limit to the number of spurs you can have from those sockets or from the wiring between them. If you would like to know how to add a spur to an existing ring main, see our project on adding an extra socket. How many amps can a 2.5 mm ring main take?
Given 2.5mm twin and earth clipped direct is 27 amps, times two for parallel is 54 amps for a clipped direct, ring. Can I use 1.5 mm cable for ring main?
It depends. If a fuse spur has been installed and then a supply from that has been taken to your new socket in 1.5 then its fine as the fuse spur will limit the current to 13 amps which 1.5 can handle. If its direct off another socket then it must be 2.5 in normal domestic wiring. Can I install a fused spur myself?
As long as the job isn't within a 'special location' such as a bathroom or outdoors, you're also allowed to install additional new light fittings, switches, sockets and even add a single fused spur to an existing circuit (a 'spur' is a new cable and socket run as a branch from an existing socket on the ring main). How many Spurs are on a radial circuit?
As many as you want using 2.5 mm sq. Unfused spurs off a 30/32 A radial. One single or one twin using 2.5 mm sq. As many as you want using 4.0 mm sq.Can I run a spur from a light switch?
Unless there is a neutral at the light switch, you'd better run the spur from the nearest light fitting. How many sockets can you daisy chain?
Two triple sockets each protected by its own 13A fuse is no different from one twin socket spurred off a ring circuit. So yes two daisy chained is ok.Why can't you take a spur off a spur?
The reason for not running two spurs from the same spur "point" is that it can lead to possible overloads in that one leg of the final can become unbalanced and exceed the max.How long can a spur off a ring main be?
Section 7.2. 2 of the OSG says 'as a rule of thumb for rings, unfused spur lengths should not exceed 1/8 the cable length from the spur to the furthest point of the ring'.
