Does house wrap go over step flashing?

House siding should be installed over the step flashing, ending at least 1 inch above the roof surface. Roof shingles should be installed over the portion of step flashing on the roof. If the roof is metal or rubber membrane, continuous flashing should be used, rather than pieces of step flashing.

Does window flashing go over or under house wrap?

The house wrap has to be flashed properly to keep the water moving down and out, not down and in. That means you want the upper layers to come down over the top of the lower layers. Where builders often get this wrong is at the top of a window.

Does drip cap go under house wrap?

Best practice is to have the house wrap over the drip cap. This way any moisture that gets under the siding and above the window/door will be directed out and over the opening. This is most critical with vinyl siding as it is likely the least water proof of most exterior finishes IMO.

Can I Staple Tyvek house wrap?

Tyvek says you can use 4 staples per 9 feet of house wrap if you tape over them an apply the siding right away. But a cap stapler is better. Apply house wrap up the gables before installing exterior trim, even if the attic is not conditioned.

The manufacturer recommends only taping the Tyvek HomeWrap seams.

Should drip edge be tight to fascia?

A vertical drip edge lip extends down roughly 1 5/8" and as Steve points out, should not be set tight against the fascia board or water may run behind the gutter and down the fascia, inviting leaks and rot.

The best way is to install the roof drip edge only along the eaves first, then place ice-and-water barrier (in the snowbelt) or felt paper (underlayment) over the drip edge. This lets any water that gets on the roof run down the underlayment and over the drip edge.

Ice and water protector needs to be installed directly onto the roof deck after you have placed the drip edge at the eave. (The drip edge will be installed over the ice and water protector and other underlayments at roof rake edges.)

How do you install house wraps after windows?

On both sides of the window or door, trim the wrap close to the window or door flange. Secure the wrap to the flange with tape or caulk. Install side flashing over the wrap. Install head flashing and extend out 3-4 inch to each side.

Can I use duct tape instead of Tyvek tape?

Duct tape won't cut it; it's too porous. We used the Tyvek and it's worked well so far. Don't use it on hard wood floors as painter's tape; it'll rip the polyurethane right off of the floor (lesson learned). @ratchetfreak for sure; but too many people think duct tape solves everything.

Can you use blue Tuck tape on Tyvek?

No. Duct tape is not designed to be used with Tyvek^® sheet.

Can I use 2 layers of Tyvek?

There is no problem with doing this. Housewrap is "breathable" by design so you won't trap moisture anywhere. You could build a wall with ten layers of housewrap and it would be more durable, not less.
