Women should start Pap smear screening at age 21. Between the ages of 21-29, women whose Pap smears are normal only need it repeated every three years. Women ages 30 and over should have testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV) with their Pap smear.

Do gynecologists routinely check for HPV?

A gynecological exam may also include a Pap test. A Pap test can show if there are any abnormal cell changes caused by certain types of HPV. Some types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) cause genital warts and some can lead to cervical cancer.

Do doctors test for HPV during Pap?

An HPV test is usually done at the same time as a Pap test — a test that collects cells from your cervix to check for abnormalities or the presence of cancer. An HPV test can be done using the same sample from the Pap test or by collecting a second sample from the cervical canal.

How does a doctor test for HPV?
