Do braids shrink?

Everytime I braid my curly hair, after a few hours when it dries, the braids shrink and look shorter. I did some research and I think it's cause my braids aren't tight enough, but I try to make them tighter everyday and somehow when I finish braiding after a few minutes they're already loose.
