One finish you can use on cement boards is stucco. Extensive preparation is necessary, but once completed, you'll have a beautiful surface, suitable for further finishing by painting or left as-is for a raw plaster look.

Can I put stucco over Hardie board?

The short answer is that yes, we can install Hardie over stucco! The best method involves installing strapping (structural wood framing) fastened through the existing stucco to the studs. This allows us to nail the Hardie boards and trims to the strapping, which is a level and structural fastening surface.

Can you apply stucco directly to durock?

Bonding stucco to Durock is as easy as applying stucco to other surfaces. In order to make certain that the bond is permanent, however, you have to ensure that the stucco is the right consistency. If you've mixed it too thin, the stucco won't spread correctly.

A scratch coat will be needed when metal lath is used. This step is not necessary when applying stone veneer to a cleaned concrete, masonry, or stucco surface.

Can you use chicken wire for stucco?
