To become a Data Analyst it is normal to gain a Degree in Statistics, Maths or another subject involving working with numbers such as Accounting. To do a maths based degree you will usually be required to have 5 GCSE’s at A-C grade and 2 A Levels one of which being Maths.
You will need excellent IT skills and be able to problem solve effectively. As the work is dealing with numbers are analysing data you will be required to have a high level of accuracy to do this role.
A Data Analyst collects numerical information and presents the results in a form of a graph, diagram, chart including tables and reports. Usually a data analyst identifies trends and predicts a future pattern.
As a first job as Data Analyst you would normally receive on the job training with someone who has done the role for some time. This will be to help you train to take on your own projects within the company.
To be a Data Analyst you must have:
- Good Mathematical Ability
- Excellent IT skills
- Good Problem solving skills
- Be methodical and logical
- Be able to analyse and interpret data
- Have a high level of attention to detail
- Be confident in writing reports and presenting information
Usually a Data Analyst role is office based working Monday to Friday, however you may need to visit other sites related to your project to collect the data you require. You can work as Data Analyst for either public service companies or private. For the public service you could be involved in population trends where as for a private business you could be analysing data to help them make the best company decisions.
